GILHAMS, Clarence
Chauncey, a Representative from Indiana; born in Brighton,
Lagrange County, Ind., April 11, 1860; attended the common schools
and the State normal school at Terre Haute, Ind.; taught school;
was employed as a salesman; auditor of Lagrange County 1894-1902;
engaged in the life insurance business; elected as a Republican to
the Fifty-ninth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the
resignation of Newton W. Gilbert; reelected to the Sixtieth
Congress and served from November 6, 1906, to March 3, 1909;
unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1908 to the Sixty-first
Congress; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1910; resumed the
life insurance business; died in Lagrange, Ind., June 5, 1912;
interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
