GARDNER, Gideon, a
Representative from Massachusetts; born in Nantucket, Mass., May
30, 1759; received a limited schooling; was a successful
shipmaster, and later became a shipowner; also engaged in
mercantile pursuits; elected as a Republican to the Eleventh
Congress (March 4, 1809-March 3, 1811); resumed his former business
pursuits; was the bearer of a petition from the citizens of
Nantucket to Congress for tax relief in 1813; died in Nantucket,
Mass., March 22, 1832; interment in Friends Burying Ground.
