DYER, David Patterson,
(uncle of Leonidas Carstarphen Dyer), a Representative from
Missouri; born in Henry County, Va., February 12, 1838; moved with
his parents to Lincoln County, Mo., in 1841; completed preparatory
studies; studied law in Bowling Green, Pike County, Mo., and was
admitted to the bar in March 1859; elected prosecuting attorney for
the third judicial circuit in 1860; during the Civil War served as
a private in Captain Hardin’s company, Pike County Regiment,
Missouri Home Guard, and as lieutenant colonel and colonel in the
Forty-ninth Regiment, Missouri Volunteer Infantry; member of the
State house of representatives 1862-1865; secretary of the State
senate in 1866; delegate to the Republican National Convention in
1868; elected as a Republican to the Forty-first Congress (March 4,
1869-March 3, 1871); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1870
to the Forty-second Congress; resumed the practice of his
profession in St. Louis, Mo.; unsuccessful Republican candidate for
Governor in 1880; appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt United
States attorney for the eastern district of Missouri and served
from March 9, 1902, to March 31, 1907; served as United States
judge for the eastern district of Missouri from April 1, 1907, to
November 3, 1919, when he retired; died in St. Louis, Mo., April
29, 1924; interment in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
