April 1, 1957; graduated Horace Mann School, New York, N.Y., 1975;
B.A., Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pa., 1979; J.D., Yale
University School of Law, New Haven, Conn., 1982; lawyer, private
practice; director and founder, Broward County, Fla., Medicare
information program, 1981-1982; member of the Florida state house
of representatives, 1982-1993; elected as a Democrat to the One
Hundred Third and to the five succeeding Congresses (January 3,
1993-January 3, 2005); not a candidate for reelection, but was an
unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the United States Senate
in 2004.
