DAVIS, Richard David, a
Representative from New York; born at Stillwater, Saratoga County,
N.Y., in 1799; was graduated from Yale College in 1818; studied
law; was admitted to the bar in 1821 and commenced practice in
Poughkeepsie; elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh and
Twenty-eighth Congresses (March 4, 1841-March 3, 1845); chairman,
Committee on Revolutionary Claims (Twenty-eighth Congress); was not
a candidate for renomination in 1844; withdrew from political and
professional life; engaged in agricultural pursuits in Waterford,
Saratoga County, N.Y., where he died on June 17, 1871; interment in
Waterford Rural Cemetery.
