Henry Johnson Brodhead CUMMINGS, Congress, IA (1831-1909)

CUMMINGS Henry Johnson Brodhead , a Representative from Iowa; born in Newton, Sussex County, N.J., May 21, 1831; attended the public schools of Muncy, Pa.; edited a newspaper in Schuylkill County, Pa., in 1850; studied law, and was admitted to the bar at Williamsport, Pa., in 1855; moved to Iowa in 1856 and settled in Winterset, Madison County; prosecuting attorney of Madison County 1856-1858; entered the Union Army in July 1861; was made captain of Company F, Fourth Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, August 15, 1861; accepted the commission of colonel of the Thirty-ninth Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, September 12, 1862, and was honorably discharged December 22, 1864; became editor and proprietor of the Winterset Madisonian in 1869; elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1877-March 3, 1879); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1878; died in Winterset, Iowa, April 16, 1909; interment in Winterset Cemetery.
