COLE, Nathan, a
Representative from Missouri; born in St. Louis, Mo., July 26,
1825; attended the common schools and took a partial course at
Shurtleff College, Alton, Ill.; engaged in mercantile pursuits in
St. Louis; a director of the Bank of Commerce for forty-three
years, most of which time he was vice president; director in a
number of insurance and other corporations; mayor of St. Louis
1869-1871; president of the Merchants’ Exchange in 1876;
elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth Congress (March 4,
1877-March 3, 1879); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1878
to the Forty-sixth Congress; resumed his former business activities
in St. Louis, Mo., where his death occurred March 4, 1904;
interment in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
