BUTLER, Mounce Gore, a
Representative from Tennessee; born in Gainesboro, Jackson County,
Tenn., May 11, 1849; attended the common schools, Old Philomath
Academy, and the law department of Cumberland University, Lebanon,
Tenn.; was admitted to the bar in 1871 and commenced the practice
of law in Gainesboro; delegate to all Democratic State conventions
from 1872 to 1916; attorney general for the fifth judicial circuit
of Tennessee 1894-1902; elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-ninth
Congress (March 4, 1905-March 3, 1907); unsuccessful candidate for
renomination in 1906; resumed the practice of his profession in
Gainesboro, Jackson County, Tenn., and died there February 13,
1917; interment in Gainesboro Cemetery.
