BRISBIN John , a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Sherburne, Chenango County, N.Y., July 13, 1818; taught school; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Tunkhannock, Wyoming County, Pa., about 1843; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative Chester Butler (January 13, 1851-March 3, 1851); president of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railway Co., 1863-1867 and member of the board of managers and general counsel from 1867 until his death in Newark, N.J., February 3, 1880; interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Elizabeth, N.J.
