Mass., 1949; Oxford University, Oxford, England, 1954; United
States Navy, 1945-1946; staff for United States Senator Pat
McNamara of Michigan, 1955; staff for United States Representative
Thomas L. Ashley of Ohio, 1955; executive assistant to Adlai E.
Stevenson in 1955 and 1956; assistant professor, Saint Mary’s
College, Notre Dame, Ind., 1957- 1958; member of congressional
delegation to First Inter-American Conference, Lima, Peru, 1959;
unsuccessful Democratic candidate for election to the Eighty-fourth
Congress in 1954 and to the Eighty-fifth Congress in 1956; elected
as a Democrat to the Eighty-sixth and to the ten succeeding
Congresses (January 3, 1959-January 3, 1981); majority whip
(Ninety-fifth and Ninety-sixth Congresses); unsuccessful candidate
for reelection to the Ninety-seventh Congress in 1980; president,
New York University, New York, N.Y., 1981-1992.
