University School of Law, Atlanta, Ga., 1971; lawyer, private
practice; United States Army, 1969-1971; member of the Georgia
state house of representatives, 1977-1991; member of the Georgia
state senate, 1991-1993; elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred
Third and to the nine succeeding Congresses (January 3,
1993-present).
