BETTS, Thaddeus, a Senator
from Connecticut; born in Norwalk, Conn., February 4, 1789;
completed preparatory studies; was graduated from Yale College in
1807; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1810 and commenced
practice in Norwalk; member, State house of representatives in 1815
and 1830; member, State senate 1831; elected lieutenant governor of
Connecticut in 1832 and 1836; elected as a Whig to the United
States Senate and served from March 4, 1839, until his death in
Washington, D.C., April 7, 1840; interment in Union Cemetery,
Norwalk, Conn.
