Charles Brewster BENEDICT

(1828-1901)

BENEDICT, Charles Brewster, a Representative from New York; born in Attica Township, Wyoming County, N.Y., February 7, 1828; attended the public schools and Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio; taught school and also engaged in agricultural pursuits; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1856 and commenced practice in Attica, N.Y.; justice of the peace 1854-1860; engaged in banking in 1859; member of the board of supervisors of Wyoming County 1869-1871 and 1873-1875, serving a part of the time as chairman; member of the Democratic State committee in 1875; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1877-March 3, 1879); was not a candidate for renomination in 1878; resumed banking in Attica, N.Y.; one of the organizers of the First National Bank at Moorhead, Minn., and also operated farming lands extensively in that vicinity; died in Attica, N.Y., October 3, 1901; interment in Forest Hill Cemetery.
