Best Known as: hockey defenseman, hall of famer, and Bruins coach
Hockey defenseman, hall of famer, and coach who led the Boston
Bruins to the Stanley Cup title in 1972. Johnson played in Montreal and
Boston as a defenseman and later became a coach and executive for the
Bruins for three decades, retiring in 1998. During his 15 years playing
for Montreal he helped them win six Stanley Cups including five from
1956-1960. He was named the National League’s Top Defenseman in 1958-1959.
Johnson was drafted to the Bruins in 1963. He played for Boston for two
years before a leg injury forced him to retire in 1965. Johnson became the
Bruin’s coach in 1970 and led the team to 50 wins and the Stanley Cup in
1972.
