Malcom McLeaninventor Born: 14 November 1913 Best Known as: inventor of containerized shipping
Malcom McLean invented containerized shipping which revolutionized
the shipping industry. Born in Maxton, North Carolina, McLean ended his
education with high school. During the Great Depression, McLean became a
trucker and eventually built his own trucking company, for which he
designed a container system that greatly reduced time, labor costs, and
damage to cargo. His shipping method reduced costs by 25 percent and his
company, SeaLand Industries became the largest cargo-shipping business in
the world. He died May 25, 2001.
