John Charnleyinventor Born: 29 August 1911 Best Known as: inventor of low-frictional torque arthroplasty or hip
replacement surgery
John Charnley was born in Lancashire, England. He studied at
Manchester University and then trained at Royal Manchester Infirmary and
Salford Royal Hospital. Although hip-replacement surgery had been
preformed already, it usually resulted in pain. Charnley developed a
better procedure that has been successful for over four decades. John
Charnley died August 12, 1982.
