Hofmann created the drug in 1938, but did not realize its effects until 1943 when he accidentally ingested the substance. Although he took LSD many more times in his life, Hofmann believed that the drug deserved respect and was interested in the resulting state of consiousnessthat it induced. Hofmann also created the drug methergine, which helps treat postpartum hemorrhaging.
