A self-proclaimed mecca for toy lovers from all over the world, FAO Schwarz was started in 1862 by Frederick August Otto Schwarz, six years after he moved to America from Westphalia, Germany. Schwarz opened his first store in Baltimore, MD, and soon moved to a larger store in New York. After a few moves, and much success, FAO Schwarz finally settled on Fifth Avenue in 1931.
