On Nov. 22, 1963, after President Kennedy was
shot in Dallas, Vice President Johnson and Jackie Kennedy returned
to Air Force One, where Judge Sarah T. Hughes gave the presidential
oath of office to Johnson.
President Kennedy had appointed Sarah Hughes to serve as a
federal district judge in 1961. She was the first woman to hold such a
