The Answer:
Without adjusting for inflation, as of the end of 2006,
Titanic is easily the winner, having grossed
more than $600 million. Not only did lots of people see
Titanic, but many saw it over and over and
over, causing it to stay in theaters for months.
If you adjust for inflation, Titanic
drops to sixth place, and Gone with the Wind
moves into the top spot. Its unadjusted gross profits are almost $199
million, but it was first released in 1939. In 2006 dollars, its
box-office take would be over $1.3 billion.
