The Question:

I'd like to compare my salary to the national average in my field. Where can I do that?

The Answer:

We have a table with the median weekly earnings of selected occupations.

For more detailed statistics, or for occupations not included in that table, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has two excellent resources. The first is its Occupational Employment Statistics, which include averages split nationally and by state. A larger database of more specific wage data is available through its National Compensation Survey. This survey breaks down the information into metro areas within each state.
