The Question:

Your almanac says the country name "Bahrain" means "two seas." What language is that in, and what two seas does it refer to?

The Answer:

Bahrain means "two seas" in Arabic. It refers to the presence of fresh water springs beneath saltwater oceans; in some places, one can actually dive beneath the layer of saltwater and get to the fresh water underneath.

For more information, see our Bahrain almanac entry, our Bahrain encyclopedia entry, or the map of Bahrain in our atlas.
